Poker: More Than Just a Game of Chance
Poker games are examples of gambling games that require strategic thinking and sound decision-making. While chance may still play a considerably large part in this particular set of card games, it is not the only factor at work when one plays a poker game.
In poker, the winner in a particular poker hand is most usually determined by what kind of hand a player is holding. After the final betting round in any kind of poker variant, if there is more than one player left, there is a showdown. During a poker showdown, all of the players still in the hand will show their concealed cards, and the player with the best hand is determined. This player then gets to win the pot for that particular hand of poker. The winning hand is most commonly the highest hand, but in some poker games, it can be lowball -where the winning hand is the lowest hand- or a high-low split, where the pot is divided between the players with the lowest and highest hands.
Almost all poker games share hand rankings, and in all poker games, a standard 52 card deck of European playing cards is used. These cards are washed, shuffled, and dealt out to each player in the hand, usually counterclockwise. Because the cards have been washed and shuffled -and sometimes cut and reshuffled as well- the cards dealt to each player are usually random; a person cannot accurately predict what kind of cards they or their opponents will be dealt, unless they have been cheating, or are mathematical geniuses. The randomness of the card deal is where luck is the most significant factor.
In other gambling games, specifically games of pure chance, like the wheel of fortune, roulette, and craps, a player can only make their bet and wait to see if they have made the correct one. They are usually playing against the house, and do not have to use any sort of strategy at all. On the other hand, with poker games, a player does not play against the house. They are usually up against other players, and all of them compete to win the pot.
A poker game usually consists of more than just one betting action, and often, winning a poker game is a matter of trying to figure out one's own opponents' cards and tendencies so that they can be maneuvered and manipulated into doing things that would benefit the player. |
